Apparently it was caused by a corrupted Inbox folder. I fixed it by deleting the ($Inbox) folder, then refreshing the database design from the main mail template. This will recreate the inbox. New mail should begin appearing in the inbox again. You can drag and drop the remaining from the All Documents view to you inbox if you like to keep everything in the inbox.
