Fred,

Along the lines Sandy suggested, if possible I would add an "Other" 
category (or equivalent) to my list box and when "Other" was used would 
retrieve the value from an associated text box. I would use Javascript to 
check that the text box was filled in when the list value was "Other" and 
that it was blank when  the list box wasn't "Other"
