Has anyone managed to get C functions such as qsort & bsearch
to work in VARPG? I use these with dynamically built arrays.

Yes - I've seen these and several others used.

Try the IBM VARPG newsgroup for samples.

There is a very brief bit in the "Programming with ..." manual but it is
not
a lot of help. I thought there used to be stuff in Larry's pages on the
main IBM web site but I can't see any sign of it now.
