John,

It turns out that these error messages are lines with class MESSAGE (query
classes or position to a token and query class). Armed with that
information, here's a script that works for me:

Ctrl-Shift-V (to verify)
Error window pops up (once in a great while!)
Error window has (Options, Messages, Insert all) chosen
Select the error (inserts error messages into source)

In source window,
  press escape
(takes you to the command line)
  top
(takes you to the top of the file)
  set exclude message
(this omits lines of class MESSAGE)
  change visible asis "this"that"bottom
    (performs the change)
  set exclude
    (stops omitting MESSAGEs)

This changes every occurrence of 'this' to 'that'. If you want to restrict
to a block, select the block before escaping to the command line and omit
"bottom from the change command.

Not clean from the command line, but you could wrap it into a macro easily
enough. For the lurkers, the double quotes can be anything that's not in
the search or replacement strings. I could have used a period, slash or
even the letter x.
