Hmmm...this one bounces back to IBM! My communications problems appear when using WAN and dial-up. When my laptop is plugged into the LAN, CODE/400 (text editor) works extremely well; using WAN or dial, frequent lockups. Right-click your communications daemon, click Properties, and check your communications log. Interesting stuff in there, usually.
