VARPG version control

Has anyone used MS Source Safe or similar products to perform version
control on VARPG projects?  When we are trying to check out projects and
building (what we believe is) the correct directory structure that all seems
to work.  However, when we attempt to open the project VARPG errors out.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what directories need to be
archived/saved.
