WEB FEATURE: AS/400 AD TOOLS STRATEGY BRINGS E-BUSINESS MOUNTAIN TO MOHAMMED http://www.as400network.com/nwn/story.cfm?ID=7614 IBM preaches the e-business gospel, but many vendors developing AS/400 applications don't seem to heed it. The lion's share of the AS/400's thousands of old standby business applications are still mired in green-screen technology. Well, if Mohammed won't come to the mountain, the AS/400's Toronto-based Application Development Tools (AD Tools) team has a plan to bring the mountain to Mohammed. Yesterday, the AD Tools team announced a plan to consolidate all of the key AS/400 e-business tools in one package that will include CODE/400, VisualAge RPG, VisualAge for Java (including Enterprise Toolkit for AS/400), and WebSphere Studio for AS/400. This new package, dubbed WebSphere Development Tools for AS/400, should hit the streets in October. Customers who already have Software Subscription and VA RPG and CODE/400 will get the new bundle as a free upgrade. (Customers who have only VA Java can't get the upgrade for free because VA Java isn't an AS/400 licensed program.) As a bonus, IBM is immediately dropping the price of VA RPG and CODE/400 from $1,150 to $300 per user. Another part of this tools package will come a little bit after the initial release. Toronto is busy developing a new tool for putting a Web "face" on a 5250 application, with little or no change to the host application. This WebFacing Tool will require WebSphere Standard edition, which ships with OS/400 free of charge. Down the road, IBM plans to consolidate not just the four tools already mentioned, but all of the AS/400 AD tools into one package. This will include RPG, Cobol, C and C++, and ADTS on the server, and the new WebSphere Development Tools for AS/400 -- including CODE/400, VA Java for AS/400, VA RPG, WebSphere Studio for AS/400, and the new WebFacing Tool -- on the client. IBM plans a no-charge upgrade to this package for customers with some of its existing tools and Software Subscription, but it hasn't yet worked out all the details. -- Cheryl Ross, NEWS/400 News Editor * This story has been adapted from its original version on the Web.
