I'd start by making sure that this is the cause of the problem. The calls are faster for sure - but are you doing enough of them for it to make a difference.
Not that I would ever want to dissuade someone from converting OPM to ILE but there is more to it than just changing the source type. For example are you calling any non-COBOL OPM programs in the call sequence? Just going out and back to a CL doesn't matter but COBOL -> CL -> COBOL creates an AG issue that may actually slow your program down.
Excessive use of STOP RUN is normally the biggest culprit in OPM COBOL.
