I just find it hard to believe that IBM doesn't have this built in.

The IBM DB2 does have the capability already, and that is called DRDA. However the MS SQL Server does not provide a DRDA AS, so apparently either too few have asked of MS to provide that support or MS ignores their requests. I believe their answer is to use JDBC, which is what I believe you would be doing instead of ARDGate; but then presumably the original questions might need some answers.? Although in the first link in my message to which Dieter has responded, that was a recommendation as alternative to "Scott K's JDBCR4 program" which AFaIK is implemented as RPGILE, so presumably could be called directly from an ILE COBOL program; i.e. the Java invocation stuff is already encapsulated elsewhere, such that the original inquiry ["call the Java class"] might similarly be moot.?
