Yes, that's the case.
For example, if you have the following:
77 FIRST-TIME VALUE '1' PIC X.
88 FIRST-TIME-THROUGH VALUE '1'.
Then, in your procedure division, you can include the following:
IF FIRST-TIME-THROUGH
(do whatever)
Or, you can code:
IF NOT FIRST-TIME-THROUGH
(do something else)

Re: [COBOL400-L] quick and easy question
The 88 is a logical variable you can use it in an IF statement.
If ERROR-CODE-CS50004 contains a value of ON, then OBJECT-NOT-FND-CS50004
is true.
Hope this helps,

Please respond to COBOL
Programming on the
iSeries/AS400
if my failing memory is correct:
01 PASSED-PARAMETERS-CS50004.
05 ERROR-CODE-CS50004 PIC XX.
88 OBJECT-NOT-FND-CS50004 VALUE "ON".
88 USER-NOT-FND-CS50004 VALUE "UN".
88 ENTRY-NOT-FND-CS50004 VALUE "NF".
the 88 is always a constant value correct?
Thanks,
Tommy Holden
