I enjoy seeing tough problems like this. That said, it might be possible 
that there is a non-displaying byte in one of your two variables. While 
I have been involved in some CICS on the iSeries, I am not sure if the 
iSeries debuggers work with CICS. If they did, I would set a brak at the 
IF statemen, the display both variables in hex format. You might find a 
byte set to a non-printable character, which would appear as a blank on 
the map.

Off subject, but years ago, we had an object on an early AS/400 that 
would be seen in a WRKOBJ display, but attempting to delete it would  
generate an error about an invalid name. Turns out some joker had called 
the RNMOBJ comands underlying program directly, passing it a hex value 
for the new name that contained an unprintable character. Took a while 
to figure that one out.
