Thanks all ... follow up to the original question:

In RPG, an external data structure is not picked up by a DSPPGMREF. In
COBOL, it appears that it is picked up. Is there any way to use a file
or external data structure in a COBOL program that will cause the
file/DS to NOT be picked up by a DSPPGMREF.
