This has been a great way to format COBOL -- a separate period only at the end of paragraphs. Use scope delimiters, single periods at end-of-paragraph and _no_ commas. Insertion of new lines becomes a breeze, and it's difficult to miss a period that's in the wrong place because there are (almost) none -- nor will there be any comma/period accidental confusions which can be extremely difficult to find. Can't recall how long all the scope delimiters have been available, but they've become indispensible to me.
