I haven't look for a while, but last time I did, it normally doesn't pay to use binary because they are converted internally to/from packed, such that ADD 1 TO W-BIN results in: CONVERT W-BIN TO PACKED-W CONVERT 1 TO PACKED-1 ADD PACKED1 TO PACKED-W CONVERT PACKED-W TO W-BIN
