EUREKA!

Thanks all.  That did the trick.  By using working storage and the syntax
Terry was so obliging to show, I managed to get things to work.

As to the COMP issue, I was simply bass-ackwrds.  I was passing in packed,
and as Lief points out, without COMP, I was defining a zoned variable.
Adding COMP fixed it just fine.
