You can _use_ any externally described file in Cobol36 (in fact if you look
at the DSPFFD output for _any_ S36EE file you'll see that it is externally
desc ribed (just not a very useful description!).  You cannot of course
declare one in the same way that you can in COBOL/400 where COPY DDS will
generate the field descriptions for you.
