Thanks for the suggestion.  I did try the entire sequence as hex (both in ASCII 
and EBCDIC -- with both creating the same
result), the escape character only as hex, and the whole thing as a string.  I 
also saw something in RPG about sending
X'03xxyy...' where xx is the number of bytes to be sent (represented by yy...) 
and tried that.  It yielded different but
incorrect results.  I have never done anything with Workstation Customization 
Objects but I have seen some entries on TNT400
that make me think that might work.

Thanks again for the suggestion -- I'll be looking in that direction as well,
