It still performs better than RPG in IO. That is because RPG must translate
every field into the target variable. COBOL just maps the data into the
buffer. This is also why COBOL can generate data decimal errors into RPG
programs from files written by COBOL.

As far as the cycle is concerned, turning if off is not really turning it
off, but removing it by specifying NOMAIN.  This is used for procedures.

As for the logic cycle executing. No, it only executes if you specify a
primary file or run off the end. Otherwise, it is just baggage.
