The most probable explanation is uninitialized variable num together with a
programming error.
Obviously in C
while(num=num)
is equivalent to
while(num)
And I cannot imagine a programmer, who is so "typing hungry" :-)

Probably he wanted to write something else....

Another thing, that can be added here, that according to my experience
unitialized variables normally have pretty stable values - I mean when the
program runs day after day under the same conditions.
But the value will be almost always different, when you run the same program
under debugger.
This is just an observation, not an explanation.

Num isn't initialized in the below code so it's value is
undetermined.

While (num=num) means assign the value of num to itself and
if the result is
not-zero, do the while.

While (num == num) means while num equals num (always true),
do the while.

While (num=num) is VERY bad coding and should pretty much not be done.

Subject: [C400-L] upgrade from V5R2 to V5R3.

Our system admin upgraded our test system's OS from V5R2 to
V5R3 this
pass weekend. After the upgrade, one of the C program quit
working. I
did a debug and notice the following defected code (note:
num contains 0
when executing the while statement):

int num;
while (num=num) {
. . .
. . .
}

I changed the while (num=num) to while(num==num) to correct
the problem.

My question is why while (num=num) working in V5R2?
