Just a guess, but are you sure you are passing the correct buffer size to fgets()? If the buffer size parameter is larger than the actual buffer, the fgets() call could be corrupting some of your internal storage (including your file pointer, presumably). The layout of storage would almost certainly be different in V5R2 vs V4R5; in V4R5 the storage you were corrupting would have been something that didn't (seem to) matter to your program.
