We would use it in shop order creation and use.

Dick,

I believe that is good advice. I've seen it not work "right" in MRP
netting, and also backflushing. But it seems correct in BOM inquiry, cost
roll-up, and on shop orders. So it depends on your business requirements --
how are you intending to use it?

By-products and co-products are also an option, and these are better
supported.

We were advised to never do that, as programs, other than the BOM programs
did not always work. Is that correct?

We're on BPCS LX.
