Our customers don't care.  Different item numbers don't work as the
customer orders, for example, item 12345.  The various prods from
different mfg locations or BOMs are 23456 and 34567.  Alternate item
substitutions must be set up however, item substitution is ineffective
as substitute allocations only take place at order entry.  If there is
no inventory at the time, the next allocation is against the item the
customer ordered.  The process to make this work is extremely labor
intensive...trust me, we are doing this now.

In my opinion, since the cans were different materials, that alone would
justify two distinct part numbers. If some customers only accept one
type,
you still need distinct part numbers.
