BPCS 8.2.01 Double Byte Character Set

Hi,
we are planning to upgrade from BPCS 6.1.01 to BPCS 8.2.01. The problem is 
when we installed BPCS 8.2.01 we found that some of the fields are DBCS 
capable. We are using DB2 Connect , MS Excel, Query/400, ODBC and JDBC 
extensively. We now found that with some of these products, do not work as 
expected anymore. 

In my humble opinion we do not need DBCS as we are only using English 
(SBCS). Now my questions are: 
1) Did we do our installation incorrect and got DBCS by accident?
2) Is there a SBCS version available?
3) If DBCS is our only option, how do we get passed changing thousands of 
PC's to accommodate DBCS
