not totally sure what you mean by a schema. i suspect you are looking
for the field definitions.

what i do is simply go top query and select the file. then select the
'select fields' action. the fields for that file will display on the
screen, along with format, size, and decimal positions. simply do a
screen copy. it's not the prettiest but it is awful fast and it has the
info that you are looking for.

there is an as/400 command DSPFFD (display file / field definitions)
that you can use to do the same thing.
