As long as we're on the subject, maybe a little 'deep thought' is in order a
la Saturday Night Live.

I firmly believe that email and the Internet, via discussion forums and
newsgroups, have been responsible for the rebirth of correspondence via
text.

In the past, when a person would have to put pen to paper, fold, crease and
insert into an envelope, then pay to have his missal delivered via the US
mail, a lot of care and caring was applied. It was simply too
time-consuming to waste time on.

In the age of the Internet, when someone can sit down, bring up an incoming
email and dash off a reply as fast as they can type and hit the <ENTER> key,
a certain (large?) amount of informality slips in. I know I'm an offender -
I'll use 'cuz' instead of because. I'll use 'gonna' instead of 'going to'.

It's easy to fall into this habit. Is it good or bad? It definitely eases
the formality inherent in written communications - but when somebody's
sensibilities are offended by it, things should change.....I guess.

I do tend to look askance at a business professional's non-use of capitals
or omissions of punctuation. If they're putting across a valid point or
asking a valid question, I ignore the grammar issues. Is it excusable?
That depends on the reader.

Rob

Jim Barry,
I did focus my comment on those that did not attempt to prepare their
comments and spell check, nor grammar check their prose. I do realize many
non-Americans have some difficulty in negotiating American English, and this
was not
meant to offend them.
I was directing my comments to the so-called educated, but sloppy writing
that you see in some of the lists.
BTW, I'm a long way from PC and intend to try to be honest and straight
forward in what I say. I do not intend to offend.
Thanks for your comments,
Ric Weide
