All these products mentioned so far have their own strengths and weakness'. Most can be overcome with a bit of "back-end" tweaking, usually by a DBA or AP. Crystal has a problem linking Text fields with Numeric fields. eg - Salesman# in BPCs is defined differently in different tables so we created views on the AS400 that had the saleman# defined in both types. We experienced performance problems with Impromptu & Powerplay. eg Where number of rows in a table was were greater than 400,000. We again built a view that summarised the data for us. Building views does have an impact on performace, so I would strongly recommend that only people with a good understanding of BPCS & Transaction volumes have access to creating Views. There are many factors to consider, but I guess the main one is the amount of funding that you have. A company that I used to work for pumped most of its BPCS data down to a SQL server and then ran most of their reports from that DB. They weren't too concerned whether people use "MS Access" to get at the data as it was "read-only". This was a cheap solution, but it suited the budget. Hope this helps Cheers Mickj -----Original Message----- From: Weston, Jeff (ICP) [mailto:Jeff.Weston@icpusa.com] Sent: Wednesday, 2 May 2001 0:49 To: 'BPCS-L@midrange.com' Subject: User Vision Importance: High We are looking at various options to replace User Vision. One of the main contenders is Microsoft Access. Has anyone used this approach? If so, we would be interested in setting up a dialog and possibly sharing Access programs.
