Hqin:

People utilize the Group Technology Codes to help sort and sequence
information in order to plan and schedule like Items together or in a certain
sequence. With Query, for example, you can list Planned Orders, Firm Planned
Orders, Customer Orders, or Shop Orders by Item, within the Group Tech Code.

 For example,

1. Assume that your finished goods are packaged in different sizes of Items.
You may want to run all of the same sizes together or in sequence. That is,
run all the 8 oz, then 12 oz., etc.

2. Assume that colors are used in a process. You can go from lighter to
darker without a major clean out. Therefore, you want to schedule Shop
Orders in such a sequence.

3. In processing, a specific bulk Item is common to several parent Items.
Therefore, you want to run all of the associated parent Items together before
changing over the line.

I am sure that you can come up with several other examples.

In BPCS, two (2) Group Tech Codes are provided in the Item Master (IIM) File:

Group Tech Code 2 is user-defined and is reference only. You can use it for
your own purposes.

Group Tech Code 1 is also a user-defined field that can be used to group like
items together primarily for manufacturing. This field is used in at least
two (2) places:

1. Group Technology Report (CAP240) - Shows manufacturing orders time-phased
and sorted by Item within group technology code.

2. Finite Forward Scheduling (MRP640) - Allows schedule revisions based on
finite forward scheduling. Two (2) of the sequence selection options Group
Technology Code - 2=Start Date/Technical Code, 3=Technical Code/Start Date

Hope that this helps. If you have any additional questions, please let me
know.
