Once I had a problem similar to this.  Basically someone renamed the physical file and left the logical files alone.  Created a new physical did some work with the records.  Then tried to access that information with some of the inquiries.  Of course it did not work because the inquires used the logical file not the physical file.  We then recompiled the logical file and that fixed the problem.
