Attempted Summary from Al NO QUESTION here for you to dig out JUST THANKS for the help Yes Glenn Ericson, I am talking about inter-related topics. I barely have time to get anything done in the first place, let alone fix what got messed up, so I need to think smart & avoid having to do it a third time, and also prioritize fix what next. In trying to stay sane, I first seek techniques to get a better grip on individual tigers by the tail, like eliminating unneccessary disk space clutter & cleaning up objects now that some past upgrades / mods / BMRs are running satisfactorily. At time of each software change, I like to have safety copies, but before next upgrade, I don't want to be hanging onto any more than neccessary. Thanks Boris for tip, then Marty with specific code to combine clues from several libraries. "Deleted Records" thread info from BPCS_L & MC Forum & SSA & IBM classes & News/400 helped us save 1/2 Gig of wasted disk space, and now Job Scheduler (BPCS_L told us how to work it) daily summary lists files most needing reorg. During continuing education I discover stuff that was not smart to do when I did not know any better, so now I have to map out where I installed BMRs with logical files not in same library as their physical, and where Y2K consultants did same thing, then what am I going to do about it, also rethinking how our environments should be defined, to avoid history repeat in future. Thanks Lacelle Marc for your perspective. I also learned backup / restore problem when logicals in library named alphabetically before library with their physical, and ours are in the wrong direction. Although we have production library and one for testing & education, I am not satisfied with how we can do testing. Most users just prefer to ADD test software over production data, so thanks Bill Robins for insight on how you do yours. While I am struggling with getting better handles on managing individual slices of our circus, I also need to learn what products are already on the market to do some of this work, without each BPCS site re-inventing the same wheels. Thanks Clare for identifying TAATOOLS from Jim Sloan.
