Third party plugins couldn't be tested by IBM or Fortra - but there was an extensive beta testing in which many people and vendors have participated (including me for example). I think that any interested vendor can simply sign the NDA and also participate.

But even then, you couldn't test every single combination of plugins and configuration changes. There are simply too much.

My best recommendation is:

1. make backup of your workspace
2. make backup of the RDi installation
3. try to upgrade following the process
4. try it

If it works out - good - if not restore your workspace and installation. Maybe give it another try.

For me it worked best, if I always deactivate the "other sources" check box in the install new software dialog. Yes it's a bummer that RDi-Eclipse is lagging so many versions behind. But even with an recent Eclipse (for Java development), you run into trouble with many plugins combined and can end up with an unusable installation after an update - been there done that.

It's the same with any sort of software - but at least the be p2-installation form makes it easy to backup/restore and even duplicate your installation without resorting to any esoteric techniques.

You can even "install" several RDi's on your machine with different versions - and even 9.6... is still running and isn't affected by 9.8... p2 installs.

Plug ins from OEM vendors are not IBMs to worry about much less support.

Apparently, that's the next step. Though you'd think that the RDi team
would have tested major plugins to their products before putting this thing
on the market. At the very least, they could have tried to determine what
was causing the message I was receiving. And you wouldn't think that a
"fix pack" would render a previously working plug in useless.

Have you engaged Aldon?
Seems to me to be a reasonable step.

I have done everything you guys have asked me to do. I cannot run the
Aldon
Plugin with this fix pack It works just fine with 9.8.0.0 and every
previous version of RDi. I've sent the error messages and so far, no one
has been able to explain why I'm receiving these messages and how I can
get
the 8.2.700 Aldon plugin to work with this fix pack.

Hi Eddie,

During our BETA, users who had added p2 update sites that target Eclipse
updates had issues updating the BETA.

Eclipse update sites use .../updates in the url, and those are intended
for the current version of Eclipse. Eclipse updates version every
quarter,
and their component sites are out of date for Eclipse 4.23 after 6 to 9
months.

Using those update sites will replace our Eclipse plugins and cause the
current installation to stop functioning. Requiring a re-install.

As an Example URL via the eGIT repository:
https://download.eclipse.org/egit/updates (usable for 4.26 to 4.30 only
and uses Java 17.)

I feel your frustration, and would like to apologize for the troubles
you've already experienced.

We have expanded our BETA program over the past 5 years, but we are
always
looking for new folks. The more diverse setup base we have, the better
releases we have.

If you want to join the RDi BETA team, simply reach out to me via IBM
Support, or contact me directly on LinkedIN.

Well, the "install new software", "check for RDi updates", "check > for
software updates" options didn't work with this fix pack. I
and others had to uninstall RDi and reinstall it.
