But, the reality is that you're unlikely to get your wish anytime

there's surely some kind of scripting capability that RDi itself
provides.

Nope. Eclipse used to have the Monkey project but it died due to lack
of interest. I miss that and don't know enough Java to get it to
compile on my machine.

In lieu of simple scripts, Eclipse advocates using plugins. A plugin is
basically Java code that you write which extends existing hooks inside
of Eclipse. Hooks that the Eclipse people deliberately left there,
specifically for the purpose of extending Eclipse. Much of RDi (all
now?) is delivered as Eclipse plugins.

If that turns out not to be enough, then there are
third-party options like AutoHotkey. With some fiddling and some
programming (but hopefully not as much programming as building your
own Eclipse plug-in), you can probably shoehorn the "open and trim"
functionality into your workflow such that it's no more work than just
a plain "open".

There is something called an Lpex profile. I have a very sketchy
preliminary wiki entry for that. Basically, you write a somewhat simple
plugin that runs when you open a source member.
