Slowdown with large DDS -- WDSCI-L

While editing a large DDS file (field reference file), it is slower than
snails. Down on the bottom right I keep on seeing 'Parsing DDS model'.
Is there some way to temporarily turn it off? By the way I have 3G
memory. I also just got an out of memory error. Please help.
