Just to add to what Daniel said, the default delimiter for %split is a blank.  When you think about it being designed to split sentences, skipping consecutive blanks makes sense.

But Jon's suggestion of an additional parameter to tell %split whether to ignore consecutive delimiters or not sounds good.

I think Jon is right - %split isn’t designed to split CSV-like data, but more for splitting „sentences“ into „words“ (tokens) for thinks like source-code interpretation or things like that.

Anyway it works exactly like described in the docs.

If you want something more CSV-like you should try the SYSTOOLS.SPLIT table function from SQL - too bad, that SQL doesn’t support dynamic arrays so far, but this TF gives you „empty“ elements.

As I said "I wish it wasn't so but that is by design apparently."

Seems like a good prospect for an Idea (formerly RFE) to add an additional option.

I suspect that RPG's %Split is based on the C function strtok() which I have previously used in RPG to achieve what %Split does. It has the same problem.

Having to preprocess the array to add data between delimiters seems to remove the value of %split() function.

Subject: Re: Variable length array and Split

This (coding wise) is off the top of my head with no testing so ....

Variable length arrays are cleared (or set to any size) via %elem - so:

%elem(Dynarray) = 0;

Using Clear I would expect to simply set all currently active elements to their default values.

%Split is documented as ignoring consecutive delimiters. I wish it wasn't so but that is by design apparently.

Only way to make it work is to pre-process the string to insert a non-delimiter character between them.

Well I guess there are other ways as well but ...

Hello sages

Having found a perfect case for splitting a string into a Variable
length array I promptly coded :

dcs-l DynArray char(20) dim(*auto:50) followed by

c clear DynArray
DynArray = %split(string : '|') ;

only to find that
a. clear does not clear a Variable length array b. %split fail to deal
with consecutive delimiters like in "first|second|third||fifth"
(it missed the missing forth element)

What am I doing wrong?

Any advice will be thankfully received.
