If I understand correctly, your old field is 12A, the new field is 10S 0
and your file key is 12A.
Since you need to keep the leading 2 blanks in your key field, the code
below should work:
eval(r) Key_Alpha = %editc(key_nbr : x;)
given a numeric value of 0000000005, this will result in a character value
of ' 0000000005'
