Charles Wilt, thank you for the tip!! I tried rearranging my ALTER TABLE as you listed, and it would not compile because I had two columns inadvertently listed twice in my original script. Once I deleted those, and reran it, it worked fine, and I got the default dates. The problem was that later on in the script I had another alter table with one of the field names I was having trouble with, and it changed the default value, so that is why I was thinking the first ALTER TABLE was not working.
