Actually, I should say that VARCHAR_FORMAT was *enhanced* in DB2 9.5. It was added at least as far back as DB2 8, but with very limited formatting support. And for people like me who hate to type a lot, TO_CHAR works as a synonym for VARCHAR_FORMAT.
