I think you are confusing the concept of database independence with
different databases.

Database independence means that you are not locking your database schema or
what the tables look like into your applications. If you need to change it,
you can.

On the AS/400 you don't really have the concept of multiple databases. Since
the database is integrated into the operating system there is just one
database. You have multiple schema's (Libraries) but just one database.

If you have worked with something like SQL Server you can have multiple
databases. On the AS/400 there is just one.

If you have other AS/400's and you have purchased the right products from
IBM you can access those databases but I am sure that is more than anything
you are doing.

As to using embedded SQL, the reasons are legion but the absolutes number
one reason is database independence.
