I wondered the same thing but then I considered that a move or eval to a smaller field will truncate so perhaps this is not so different.

Do you mean the prototype has OPTIONS(*VARSIZE) specified? Or just that you pass a larger variable than the prototype says is allowed? Can't say I've noticed that the compiler accepts that.

As always, even with the "protection" afforded by prototyping the programmer has to be careful and know what they're doing.
