The IF statements can be soft coded as well.

ie

if STATUS = validstatus(1)
or STATUS = validstatus(2)
etc

My point was that the SCAN method is only a shortcut in the sense that it contains fewer source code lines. Under the covers the processing is almost the same.

The %scan() method does, however, all the validation list '13579' to be
"soft coded". IMHO, this is more than worth the tiny difference in
