The based(TEMPLATE) is an reference for the next programmer to know that
this is a template DS in 5r4. The DS isn't used anywhere execpt in a
LikeDs keyword. In 6r1 IBM makes TEMPLATE as keyword.

It is nothing fancy, but the first time I saw this was in code written by
Scott K. In one of the articles he wrote, he explains why he did this.

Sorry to be so dumb, but, I scanned the whole of the RPGILE reference
manual for TEMPLATE and didn't find it.
I'm having trouble understanding what difference based(TEMPLATE) makes.
Also, surely myrecord must be defined in both caller and callee?

I usually declare such DS's as BASED( TEMPLATE) or with v6r1 use the new

TEMPLATE keyword in the copy source member containing the prototype.

That way both the callee and the caller are using the same prototype and

the DS definition.
