Aside from the issue: a design thought. Why not a for loop? Its simpler, probably faster, and much clearer to see what is happening.
for Dr# = 1 to SizeOfSubfile
chain(n) DR# Filerec;
... do something;
endfor

I get the same error with
chain (Dr#) Filerec;

Anyone know what my problem is?
