Sometimes it is important to use a backhoe to dig a hole in the grown.
Sometimes a shovel is best.
If you have a large hole to dig, a shovel can do it, but it
is a stupid tool to use.
If you have a 10 inch hole to dig, a backhoe is a stupid tool to use.

Use the right tool for the right job. I agree 100%.

Having said that, for one-off thing, SQL is almost always the
right tool to use.

I agree, why compile a program object that will only be used once. Even if you
needed to do the same
thing again down the road I'd be willing to bet you'll have forgotten about the
program and end up
writing a new one.

But if you have RPG skills, or C skills or whatever, use that
tool. The goal isn't the tools it's the results. (Unless
you're talking about .Net, then it is almost always the wrong
tool for the job.)

Now wait a minute Bob, first you said use the right tool for the right the
right job. Next you say
SQL is the right tool. Now you're saying using whatever tool you happen to
have available.

I don't think so.

Sure, you might use the wrong tool for the immediate task, since it will get
the job done quicker than
you could run out Home Depot and buy a new tool.

However, my point is that it's (past) time for James to add a new tool to is
toolbox for future needs.

Charles
