I need to change the font from Courier to Times New Roman
on all of our letters and external reports.


The short answer is that you are changing from a monospaced font (Courier) 
to a proportional font (Times New Roman). By definitions, your columnar 
spacing is going to change.  I can't think of an easy way  to continue to 
use columnar spacing.
