'contract' which they can sign which simply promises not to attempt to
reverse-engineer or decompile the code - you might not need a lawyer to
get
involved with that, and they'd be hard-pressed to justify not signing it.

This is a good point, Rory.  IANAL, but as far as I understand it, the idea
is not to make it impossible to crack your code - that can never be done -
but instead to make it hard enough that it can't be done accidentally (this
proves intent), and then to make sure they sign an agreement saying that
they won't.  Then you have a breach of contract.
