Have you tried simply removing the FREE op-codes and seeing if it make any
difference?

In my experience the vast majority of applications have over the years fixed
the problems that caused them to add FREE in the first place.  Mostly
because FREE was never a 100% fix anyway.

What is the application?  Someone else may have already converted it (as
many have with JDE for example) and can tell you what the problems (if any)
may be.
