1 - Is retField a field from WPUSCHEDLE or is it a variable in your 
program?  If it is a variable then it needs to be prefixed with a :
2 - Is InPickupDate a field from WPUSCHEDLE or is it a variable in your 
program?  If it is a variable then it needs to be prefixed with a :
3 - You do NOT use the first two %trim's.
     C/Exec Sql
     C+ UPDATE PUBWRK/WPUSCHEDLE 
     C+ SET ctrName = %Char(:retField), 
     C+ appName = %Char(:retField)
     C+ WHERE %Trim(dateName) = %Char(:inPickupDate)
     C/End-Exec
