Have you thought about using the INDARA option?  It removes the indicators
from the normal data buffer.

thanks - I can't do the subfiles explicitly (indicators and such), but
all I had to do to trick the pre-compiler was to define them 'like'
the fields I'm retrieving in my select/fetch.

it's redundant, but it works.
