Carol,

You're using ASC's ESNDMAIL command? If so, you can turn on SMTP
journaling (GO ESEND > 21 > 10), then use ESEND's journalling features
to write journal entries to a file and look at it.

I don't think the remote SMTP server will tell you if the address is
invalid, but you will be able to see whether the message was delivered
succesfully.

However, if you're using a mail router (like we do), journalling will
only tell you what is happening between your local iSeries and the
mail router. You'll need to use your mail router's facilities for
message tracking.

One thing I would suggest (we don't do this now, but we're planning on
it) is to use a separate SMTP server for routing your outbound mail
that's sent programmatically. If the SMTP server you use to
send/receive mail for your users is pummelled by spam (like ours is),
it's a pain in the neck to read through logs to see if a message was
delivered successfully to the remote server.
