Well, if you either always have all digit positions filled, or you can add
code to guarantee that the number is right-adjusted and padded with
zeroes, then all you have to do is define an anonymous data structure
overlaying your string variable with a zoned decimal. Just don't attempt
to access the zoned decimal value until you can guarantee it's a valid
zoned decimal number.
