Here's a code snipped where I use scan for a Mod 11 check sum program I wrote.
Value will return the position in the Digits string of the character ThisChar.

HTH.

D Digits S 39A Inz('0123456789A~BCDEFGHIJK~LMNOPQRS-
D TU~VWXYZ')
D I S 2S 0 Inz(*Zero)
D ThisChar S 1A Inz(*Blanks)
D ContainerNumb S 10A

C Do 10 I
C Eval ThisChar = %SubSt(ContainerNumb: I: 1)
C ThisChar Scan Digits Value

C If Value > 0
C Eval Value = Value - 1
C Eval WorkValue = WorkValue + (Value * (2 ** I))
  ...

C *InzSR BegSR

C *Entry PList
C Parm ContainerNumb

C EndSR

Regards,

Jim Langston
